A document written in Secretary Hand Old Handwriting
Workshops Project
(‘Palaeography’)

Do you struggle with old handwriting in historical documents?

Then help is at hand with our ‘Secretary Hand’ workshops.

Following the success of the first series of workshops, the society is now running in Autumn 2012 a second series of four two-hour Saturday morning sessions for those who missed the first. They will be suitable both for those wishing to refresh their skills and for complete beginners. Our aims will be:

  1. To Study ‘C16th & C17th Secretary Hand’ letter formation.
  2. To Create participants’ own reference list of ‘difficult’ letters.
  3. To Read early modern documents, including wills and parish documents.
  4. To Transcribe these documents and discuss the conventions of transcription.
  5. To Find Out how to gain access to these documents.
  6. Help with participants’ own ‘knotty documents’ at the end of each session – but Latin translations are not included.

DATES: Saturdays 15 September, 6 October, 17 November, 1 December.
TIMES: 10.30am – 12.30pm.
PLACE:At the Centre for Bucks Studies, Walton Street, Aylesbury.
COST:£20 for the four meetings, which will include mid-morning refreshments.
