Threshing Barns survey

Historic Buildings Group update
20 May 2009

The building group projects are now well underway, with some good results in the form of survey drawings, documentation and database information becoming available. One such project is a survey of a threshing barn, and a summary of this is given below.

A small team of barn enthusiasts travelled to Little Marlow in March to have a look at a large barn currently in use for storage and farm sales. The owner kindly offered full access to the barn and area surrounding, although it was difficult to get close to two aspects of the building due to the closeness of a neighbouring barn and the presence of attached sheds.

The team valiantly attempted to survey the exterior of the building using the triangulation method of surveying, trying out the recently acquired equipment purchased for the group’s use. The exercise was enjoyable and educational, but the barn proved to be a more complex building than we had perhaps anticipated, and the team felt that further surveying practice on a simpler building would be helpful!

It is likely that future barn surveys will use photographic and descriptive records in order that more ground can be covered by the project.

11 March 2009

Aylesbury YAC is a branch of the UK wide Young Archaeologists’ Club, part of the Council for British Archaeology. YAC aims to involve young people in archaeology, local history and heritage by:

  • Creating fun ways to investigate the past
  • Encouraging a greater understanding of archaeology
  • Developing awareness of local and national heritage
The club is for young people aged between 8 and 14 years, and it meets on the second Saturday of each month, at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies on Walton Street in Aylesbury. There is a small charge of £2 per session to cover refreshment and equipment costs, but no joining fee.
The focus is most definitely on having fun, with a wide range of hands-on activities, guest speakers and visits. The theme for 2009 is Prehistoric Britain and sessions will include:
  • Flint knapping
  • A field walk and surveying session at Pulpit Hill Iron Age fort
  • Prehistoric religion and ritual
  • A full day prehistoric camp
If you or anyone you know would be interested in joining Aylesbury YAC, please contact
