HS2: The ‘design refinements’ of 2013
PART OF THE HS2 HISTORIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROJECT
Increased destruction at Stoke Mandeville and Calvert
In 2013 HS2 Limited issued a set of changes to the route of the proposed line to resolve particular engineering
issues and to provide for the maintenance infrastructure, such as rail sidings and power transformer stations. These
they termed ‘design refinements’.
Three places in Buckinghamshire are affected:
- The viaduct over Savay Lake near Denham, where the alteration moves the line
a little farther away from the listed building:

The amended route of the line (in red) at Savay Lake. The prominent viaduct, 400 metres
from the Grade 1 Listed Savay Farm, will still have a high impact on this historic setting.
|
- the introduction of ‘maintenance-loop’ sidings at
Stoke Mandeville, where HS2 will now effectively destroy the whole of the old church ruins,
graveyard and deserted village site.
Stoke Mandeville, where the width of the line is now doubled by adding a
maintenance siding on each side. This will obliterate all remains of the medieval church (above
the word ‘House’) and the deserted village site.
|
|
- and changes to connecting lines at Calvert, which will mean the loss of the
Grade 2 listed Furze Farm.
|
Changes to the HS2 plans at Calvert, where extra connecting lines (‘chords’)
for the maintenance depot and east-west rail line will bring the demolition of the Grade 2 listed Furze Farm.
