The old causeway crossing the fields south-west of the former Westbury Mill.

Westbury Causeway

This is a former causeway, or raised footpath, which crosses low-lying fields on the north bank of the River Great Ouse near Westbury, six miles west of Buckingham. The stone-built causeway, probably dating from the late 18th century, leads from Westbury Mill to a crossing-point on the river.

Today, however, the causeway is in an increasingly ruinous state. The footpath to the modern concrete bridge now runs beside the causeway instead of on top of it. The causeway is not a scheduled historic monument, so is unprotected.

For this reason Nigel Wilson produced a survey report on Westbury Causeway. Today he is a member of the society's Active Archaeology Group, though this was in fact founded after his survey had been completed.

THE SURVEY REPORT

The Report examines the history of the causeway and its relation to the nearby Westbury Mill (pictured right as it was in 1936; it has since been converted into flats). The report also maps out the former mill-races and millpond, now silted up.
