PICTURE (TOP): Workers at Marlow Brewery around 1900. |
This payments book was started in about 1874, listing names of servants and amounts paid. The book continued in use for eighty-three years, until December 1957.
The entries and the handwriting changed over time. Who were its anonymous writers?
From the servants we discover that they were living at a property called Plantation, on Amersham Common, or one of its
neighbouring buildings. From the 1881 census we learn that George Weller was living at Plantation. He was aged 36, a brewer and maltster, the employer of 50 men.
