This summer, the Amersham Society was approached by Rob Michael from Dublin. The subject of his enquiry was a painting which had been in the possession of his family since the 1980s. It was of John Lawrence, born in 1700, who had a link to the Tyrwhitt Drakes. After some research, it was established he had taken over the lease of a brewery in Amersham in 1728, a direct forerunner of the Wellers, to whom his son sold out his interests in 1775. This fascinating journey into 18th-century Amersham led to a number of further interesting discoveries about John Lawrence of Amersham (1700 -1764), a gentleman and a brewer, his family and the connection to the Weller family and Drakes of Shardeloes. • For further information read ‘Portrait of a Gentlemen’ by Rob Michael, an article published in the Society's September 2020 Newsletter- see below or click here. |
